Everyone knew that a lot of people despised the "always online" requirement of Diablo II and the god awful connection problems experienced by many on its early release. Surprisingly, however, in an interview with Rock, Paper, and Shotgun and as exemplified by Destructoid, Diablo III lead designer Kevin Martens reminisced "how upset people were that Diablo II let some players play online, while other characters were offline only." then finally stating, "That was the wrong choice to allow people to play offline, and we still stand by that."
